Benefits of Myer’s Cocktail - May Be Just What You Need!

functional medicine specialist Dr. Ellen Antoine speaking with a patient model

Are you fatigued? Frequently ill? Feeling depressed? Intravenous micronutrient (vitamin/mineral) therapy might be just what you need! We’re sharing the many benefits of Myer’s Cocktail and IV therapies.

John Myers, MD, a physician from Baltimore, MD pioneered the use of intravenous micronutrients as part of treatment protocols for varying medical conditions. After he died in 1984, Dr. Alan Gaby, MD continued his work of administering IV therapy to his patients. Dr. Gaby documented the protocols used and the benefits seen in thousands of individuals.

Why IV and Not Oral?

IV administration of micronutrients can achieve serum concentrations that cannot be obtained via oral intake; as high as 10 times that which is possible with oral intake. For example, high-dose oral vitamin C and magnesium are often associated with loose stools and cannot be tolerated. Furthermore, injecting vitamins and minerals intravenously bypasses digestion, allowing patients with compromised gastrointestinal health with poor absorption adequate bloodstream levels of these nutrients. Cells utilize these nutrients to make energy efficiently.

Some of these nutrients exert pharmacological effects. For instance, vitamin C produces an anti-histamine effect, which benefits those with various allergic conditions. Magnesium promotes relaxation of muscles - thus, useful in the treatment of vasospasm-related headaches, asthma, depression/anxiety, hormonal imbalances, and muscle aches and pains.

What Is in a Myer’s Cocktail?

  • Vitamin C
  • Magnesium
  • Selenium
  • B vitamins
  • Calcium

The dosing of each can be varied to meet the individual’s needs and is referred to as a ‘Modified Myer’s Cocktail.’

Benefits of Myer’s Cocktail, IV Therapy, and Who’s a Good Candidate?

Almost anyone can benefit from this type of therapy; even those with decent health but feel like they may need a boost in their energy levels or mood. It is especially helpful in those with acute or chronic stress, such as athletes, students, professionals, etc. Immune boosting is an important benefit of this therapy. Vitamin C has been shown to have an antiviral effect, but only at higher concentrations, making it especially valuable in treating and preventing acute viral illnesses.

The benefits also result in better overall function and energy capacity in your cells. This means you recover more quickly from health insults, especially if you are chronically ill.

Improvements have been noted in those with:

  • Asthma
  • Fatigue/Chronic fatigue
  • Migraines/Tension-type headaches
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Acute muscle spasm
  • Those with frequent infections
  • Upper respiratory infections
  • Sinusitis
  • Allergic conditions
  • Mood disorders – depressed, anxious
  • Under chronic stress

How Often May You Receive Treatments?

The frequency of treatments really depends on your current health. If you are getting ready for a marathon or a wedding (which might feel like training for a marathon), your immediate need might be higher but treatment would be anticipated to end rather quickly, usually sometime after the event. For those with more chronic conditions or needs, weekly or biweekly infusions for some period of time might be more appropriate. Health concerns like chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia frequently require a longer course of treatment but are ultimately dependent on the patient’s response.

Potential Side Effects of IV Therapy

IV nutrient therapy is a very safe treatment. Some describe a sensation of heat with administration. This is typically associated with higher doses of magnesium that act to dilate blood vessels and increase blood flow. Transient decreases in blood pressure are sometimes seen as a result of this vasodilation. This is rare and can be addressed by slowing down the rate of administration. Most patients experience a wonderful boost of energy a few hours to a few days after therapy.
