Have you tried just about everything, but still aren’t making the health progress you’d like? PEMF, or pulsed electromagnetic fields, is one of the many therapies we recommend to patients that have exhausted their options but are still not experiencing the full health that they would like. We’re sharing the benefits of PEMF, and pro tips on all you need to know.
A magnetic field is a force field created by a permanent magnet - either naturally or ‘artificially’ - by an electrified coil. Think of a bar magnet with a magnetic South pole and North pole. When two identical poles are moved toward one another there is a repulsive force that can be felt. This magnetic force field may be static or it may be pulsating, in other words, cycling at a certain frequency.
A magnetic field has the property of being capable of penetrating through matter without losing its effectiveness. Therapeutically, the ability to penetrate through matter without losing effectiveness is important because magnetic field therapy can penetrate clothing whereas other physical therapeutic devices (TENS units, for instance) cannot. The earth has a magnetic field and its influences on nature have been observed and studied for thousands of years.
Researchers early on and since have all agreed that life would not be able to exist on our planet without the magnetic field. It is a protective, multilayered shield from harmful radiation in outer space, especially particle radiation. Many animals find their direction by using the earth’s magnetic field, including migratory birds, ants, termites, bees, and many marine animals. Humans are also influenced by the earth’s magnetic field and cosmonauts have seen significant influence not only on bone growth but also on emotional well-being.
Even very small magnetic fields on the human body can impact health as is demonstrated by the phenomenon of weather sensitivity. Proof of this was provided by research findings by scientists at the University of Giessen in 1998.
The use of magnetic fields for health isn’t new. According to the first written reports, magnetic fields were used for treating all sorts of health conditions more than 3500 years ago. The Chinese used the earth’s magnetic field for directional orientation when they developed their first needle compass. The Greeks and Romans used magnetic fields for treating a wide variety of diseases. In 1965, Linus Pauling, a two-time Nobel prize winner, described the biomagnetic property of blood.
Every cell contains tiny organelles, called mitochondria; the powerhouse generator of the cell. These delicate and essential structures help our cells with the many functions they maintain every single second. One of the vital processes that mitochondria execute is producing energy. PEMF helps by stimulating and re-charging these powerhouse generators thus helping the cells’ production of Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and energy production is enhanced. By using pulsed electromagnetic fields therapy, more energy can be delivered to specific locations in the body. The result is more effective cellular repair and better tissue repair.
PEMF is an effective, non-invasive, and side-effect-free antidote to pain. It directly affects nerve cells that are communicating to our brain that our body is experiencing pain. It has anti-inflammatory implications, helping to minimize pain. This also affects flexibility – especially when treating stiff and inflamed muscles. PEMF treatment increases the range of motion that can be achieved and results are often immediate. For bone fractures, PEMF is especially useful in healing non-union fractures. This is because electromagnetic waves are the earth’s tool to cause biochemical changes that ultimately result in an increased speed in bone formation. PEMF therapy has also been found to relieve depression and other mental health conditions. It’s also been used in the treatment of everything from arthritis, cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, to multiple sclerosis, autism, diabetes, and many other chronic health conditions.
In addition to impacting inflammation and bone healing, here’s just a sampling of the many other benefits of PEMF:
We offer three modalities of PEMF at our functional medicine center: a mat with optional ‘glasses’ that provides light and sound therapy, a moveable coil ‘pillow’ for smaller areas, and a probe for more discrete, targeted application. Dr. Ellen or Dr. Scott will specify which specific modality will be best suited for clients’ cases, or clients wishing to use PEMF only can choose which modality when booking their appointment.
Remote clients can purchase their own PEMF machine at a discounted rate through The Center for Fully Functional® Health (CFFH) by calling (317) 989-8463 or emailing [email protected].
A PEMF session typically lasts 20-45 minutes, depending on the modalities needed. You’ll lay down on a massage table fully clothed, the device will be put on and a timer will be set. If you require the probe (targeted application), one of our staff will stay with you and direct the probe over the affected area. We’ll let you relax and that’s it!
You can book an appointment by clicking here. We are also happy to speak with you at (317) 989-8463, Monday-Thursday, from 8AM – 5PM Eastern time.
