This article JUST came out from the National Institutes of Health on gut health and the immune system. It explains that the gut trains the immune system to protect the brain. The professional reference is in the article as well.

Our Summary

This article from the National Institutes of Health helps explain in detail why gut health is imperative. In this study, it was shown that the gut or “GI tract” helps train the immune system to protect the brain. In PANS and PANDAS , the immune system, instead of protecting the brain, actually attacks it. Many of the children we see also have digestive issues like constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain and bloating, food intolerances, or allergies.

We focus on healing the gut to help heal the immune system and stop the autoimmune attack. Many of the brain chemicals that help us think, feel, or have emotions, are produced in the intestinal wall. Supporting the gut membrane is an important part of our Fully Functional® “Support” pillar.

Addressing the Immune System Dysregulation

This article reaffirms what we have been telling our patients and their parents all along, rather than just giving antibiotics and IVIG. Although we use antibiotics and IVIG when appropriate, addressing the immune system dysregulation by healing the gut is a vital step to help heal these children for good and bring them back to their parents.
If the immune system is not brought back to an appropriate state, the children may remain sick and get frequent flares of symptoms. It is nice to see mainstream science begin to discover some of the concepts we have been emphasizing with our PANS/PANDAS patients for years.
If you are concerned that your child may have PANS or PANDAS or if you are tired of the PANS/PANDAS merry go round and are seeing no progress in your child, we’d love to see your child as a patient.
